How Much Room Should You Leave For The Cyclist As You Overtake On A Road That Has A 30 Mph Speed Limit?
By Umme Hani on Aug 15, 2024To put it simply when you are passing a cyclist on a road with a speed limit of thirty miles per hour you need to give them space. It is important to prioritize safety above all else when passing a cyclist.
Ensuring everyone’s safety while driving is more important than merely avoiding them! It’s simple to figure out how much space to give when passing a cyclist. At least as much room as you would if you were passing a car.
When overtaking a cyclist you should evaluate the situation. Just as you wouldn’t try to squeeze past a car with very little room to spare if you were trying to overtake it, neither would cyclists. Just like every other car on the road, they require space to maneuver. It’s safer for everyone involved if you give a cyclist enough room when passing them.
Furthermore, it is required by law in the UK according to the Highway Code: when passing a cyclist give them at least as much space as you would give a car. Thus keep in mind these basic guidelines the next time you’re passing a cyclist.
Happy travels!
